Doggy Down

Recently there has been an outbreak in the Midwest, of the Dog Flu. You heard that right! Nothing like it has been seen in the U.S., and it has been known to infect over 1,000 dogs, killing six in the process.

The sickness causes symptoms similar to those of the human flu, such as coughing, nasal discharge, fever and loss of appetite, though a small percent of dogs can be carriers of the virus without showing symptoms, experts said. It is most likely to pass on through the touching of noses with other dogs, which occurs at any places that dogs come often, such as the vet clinic, the dog park, etc.
It is not likely that humans will catch this virus but the possibility can't be tossed aside. If you go to the dog park, keep your dog on the leash and stay away from popular dog areas. The sickness usually lasts for 1-3 days, though the animal is contagious for up to 14 days after, and the symptoms usually last to about 5-7 days.
The new virus, known technically as H3N2, has been found in China and Korea, and an infected animal was probably transported and spread the virus. There is a vaccine, but it is only given to animals with high risk of infection, and experts don't know if it completely protects or not. A new company (unknown) is working on it but it will be a while before anything comes of it. Remember to keep your pooches safe!
